Comprehensive Draft Survey Services

What is a Draft Survey?

A draft survey is a precise nautical method used to determine the weight of bulk cargo loaded onto or discharged from a vessel. This procedure is fundamentally based on Archimedes’ Principle of flotation, which states that the weight of a floating body is equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. By performing detailed draft readings and complex hydrostatic calculations, marine surveyors can ascertain the exact quantity of cargo with a high degree of reliability.

The Importance of Accuracy in Bulk Cargo Measurement

In the shipping industry, especially for dry bulk commodities such as iron ore, coal, grains, and cement, even minor discrepancies in weight can lead to significant financial losses. Draft surveys provide a net cargo weight accuracy of approximately ±0.5%, making them a globally accepted standard for commercial and contractual purposes.

  • Commercial Integrity: These surveys are essential for the issuance of accurate Bills of Lading and customs declarations.
  • Preventing Financial Disputes: Accurate weight verification ensures that all stakeholders, including ship owners and charterers, agree on reliable figures before shipment.

Our Professional Methodology

To ensure the highest level of precision, a standardized and meticulous process is followed for both initial and final surveys:

  1. Draft Mark Readings: Surveyors record the draft at six standard points on the hull, forward, midships, and aft on both the port and starboard sides.
  1. Density Determination: The density of the surrounding water (sea or river) is measured to account for buoyancy variations that affect displacement.
  1. Tanks and Consumables Assessment: All deductible weights, including ballast water, fuel oil, diesel oil, and fresh water, are measured and accounted for in the calculations.
  1. Hydrostatic Calculations: Using the vessel’s approved hydrostatic tables, surveyors apply necessary corrections for trim, list, and hull deformation (hog/sag) to determine the corrected net displacement.

Contractual and Legal Significance

Draft survey reports serve as vital legal documentation in maritime law. They provide essential evidence in the event of cargo shortage claims or disputes between parties. By maintaining a clear audit trail through professional reporting, businesses can safeguard their interests throughout the entire logistics chain.

Compliance with International Standards

All services are performed in accordance with internationally recognized protocols, such as the UN/ECE Draught Survey Code. These standards ensure uniformity in reporting and facilitate the auditing of survey results across global ports.
